Dear Interbeef WG members,
In recent years we have set out to look at the Interbeef future through the Interbeef Genomics Task Force and Interbeef WG meetings. At the end of last year you have also received information about an ICAR-led Interbeef Strategic Planning activity. Here follows a summary of the ongoing process and its aims:
The Interbeef service is undergoing a strategic review to enhance its value, unlock future opportunities, and ensure long-term sustainability. This initiative is driven by valuable feedback from WG members and insights from the ICAR Board, reflecting the evolving needs of the industry. Interbeef has already generated significant enthusiasm and delivered substantial benefits, and this review aims to build on that success—aligning the service with real demand and securing its financial sustainability. The ultimate goal is to develop a future-ready service that not only meets the needs of its members but also advances international evaluations in the beef industry.
To support this vision, a strategic planning workshop was held in Amsterdam in late January, bringing together a diverse group of Interbeef stakeholders. Participants were highly engaged and optimistic, recognizing exciting possibilities such as integrating international estimated breeding values (EBVs) into national evaluations, expanding the range of traits assessed, and evolving Interbeef’s international genetic evaluations into multi-breed, multi-trait, single-step international genomic evaluations producing GEBVs and SNP solutions.
A strategic roadmap, outlining Interbeef’s long-term vision, key milestones, and action plan, is now in development. This roadmap will undergo a formal review by 30 June 2025, following extensive engagement and consultation with both existing and potential service users. This inclusive process will help ensure strong industry participation and position Interbeef to deliver even greater value.
Through this strategic review, Interbeef is reaffirming its role as a global leader in beef genetic and genomic evaluations. By embracing innovation and strengthening collaboration, the service is set to drive the industry forward, creating new opportunities and delivering lasting benefits for all stakeholders.
Kind regards,
Toine Roozen, Martin Burke
