Digi4Live Newsletter Issue #1 Digi4Live is a Horizon Europe project spanning four and a half years, dedicated to utilising data and digital tracking to boost the economic and environmental performance of small and medium-scale farms. Digi4Live supports the European livestock sector in adopting digital technologies and data, demonstrating how improved standardisation and communication can benefit farmers, food and technology businesses, and public administration. Digi4Live will provide evidence on how digital tools can improve animal welfare, environmental practices, breeding, traceability, and cost-effective compliance monitoring. Additionally, the project will explore how data sources and technologies can be used to assess sustainability in the livestock sector. The core principles of Digi4Live focus on enhancing technical, knowledge, and economic capabilities for leveraging livestock data and digital technologies in various scenarios. The results gathered during the project will be accessible to all stakeholders within the European livestock sector. Digi4Live kick-off meeting, 1-2 February 2024, Helsinki (Finland) The project kicked off with a dynamic meeting in Helsinki (Finland), where representatives from 16 partner organisations gathered. These partners, ranging from research organisations to competent authorities, organisations working with standardisation and data exchange and business and policy experts, came together to shape the future of livestock farming. The discussions focused on the key role of standards, data concepts and digital tools in enabling the valorisation of data. This diverse group engaged in a rich exchange of knowledge and expertise, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and innovation. The meeting was a great success, laying a strong foundation for the project’s future. As we move forward, we expect exciting advancements that will benefit farmers, consumers, governance and the broader community. Stay tuned for more updates! Case Study Hub Digi4Live will develop six innovative, data-oriented solutions to monitor livestock, their surroundings, and environmental impacts. These solutions will be demonstrated through comprehensive case studies that address challenges and ensure scalability across the EU. The case studies, operating in France, Germany, Greece, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, the Netherlands, and Finland, aim to improve livestock tracking using advanced technologies. They will showcase methods for collecting animal health and welfare data, enhancing resilience and transparency, and reducing administrative burden. Additionally, Digi4Live will digitise data for environmental impact assessments using a life cycle approach. Digi4Live Stakeholder Engagement Digi4Live aims to revolutionise sustainability in the livestock sector through enhanced digital and data-driven solutions, fostering stakeholder trust while addressing cost efficiency and legal requirements. Stakeholders, including farmers, practitioners, data providers, researchers, and policymakers, are invited to collaborate in co-creating innovative approaches across the thematic case study hub. This collaborative effort seeks to optimise data use and digital technologies, ensuring transparency and efficiency throughout the livestock supply chain. Exciting Digi4Live Thematic Expert Panels Ahead D igi4Live will establish four Thematic Expert Panels (TEPs) consisting of stakeholders: data interoperability and standardisation (TEP-I), state-of-the-art digital tools and technologies (TEP-T), societal, regulatory and legal issues (TEP-R), and data sharing and exploitation (TEP-S). These panels will engage in stocktaking and co-analysing issues, co-designing and co-implementing case studies and concepts, and co-analysing their effects through focus groups and workshops. TEPs will play a critical role in various work packages of the project. Stakeholders participating in the TEPs will have a chance to contribute to the concepts and solutions that Digi4Live will deliver. Additionally, the TEPs will benefit from the project’s dissemination, exploitation, and communication activities.
